SENSITIVITY
Galatians 6:2

READING HEARTS AND SOULS

It is said of St. Jean-Baptist Vianney, the CurŠ of Ars, France, "Jean was a priest who could barely read and speak in Latin, but large numbers of people swarmed to his parish church. The reason was very simple: this was a man who could read hearts and souls"

Our pastor continued his sermon series on The Ministry yesterday and, as usual, had a very helpful sermon to all of us. I think the reason his preaching is so effective - especially this series - is that he, like the CurŠ of Ars, knows how to "read hearts and souls." At least it seems to me that he is zeroing in on topics that are of great concern to me. What a blessing when the pastor can direct his thoughts and words to questions that people are really concerned about!

The Scripture passage for today calls each of us to "bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ." Our pastor is helping to "bear" our burdens when he labors to share with us God's tender concern for us all. I've not had the opportunity to share with him one-on-one a concern that is really causing me pain, but I suspect that he will be able to help "bear my burden" when the time is right for this confrontation. So I thank God for my pastor!

Father, one of Your greatest blessings and greatest demands on each of us who are members of Your family by faith in Jesus Christ, is to "bear one another's burdens." That happens only when we are sensitive to what may be bothering our brothers and sisters in the faith. Give us this gift of sensitivity so that we may recognize our opportunity to serve them by "bearing" their burdens!
